Istanbul spans two continents and is served by two airports, so the question “how far is my hotel from the airport?” has no single answer. A ride from a hotel in Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport (IST) and a ride from Kadıköy to Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) can differ a great deal in time and cost. In this guide we group the city’s main districts into the European and Asian sides and, for each area, outline which airport is closer, roughly how long the trip takes and which vehicle class suits you best. Our goal is to clear up the open questions before you land, so you can plan your transfer calmly and in advance.
European side districts
The historic peninsula, meaning Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Fatih, is where most tourists stay. Many hotels sit on narrow streets, so the vehicle may stop at the nearest main road rather than at the door; in that case our chauffeur walks with you and helps with your luggage. The trip from Istanbul Airport usually takes around an hour, depending on traffic.
The Taksim, Beyoğlu, Şişli and Beşiktaş corridor is popular with business travellers and with visitors who want to feel the pulse of the city. For guests staying here, IST is generally the more logical airport. Northern business hubs such as Sarıyer, Levent and Maslak are among the closest parts of the city to IST, which is a real advantage on early-morning flights for corporate travellers.
Western districts such as Bakırköy, Yeşilköy, Florya and Esenyurt lie near the former Atatürk Airport. Reaching IST from there means a long run to the north, and in peak hours the trip can take noticeably longer. We recommend leaving a generous buffer when you plan your flight time.
Asian side districts
Kadıköy, Moda, Üsküdar and Ataşehir are the liveliest and most popular parts of the Asian side. Getting from these districts to Sabiha Gökçen Airport does not involve crossing the Bosphorus bridges, so the journey is usually more predictable. If you stay in Kadıköy or Ataşehir, flying from or into SAW is typically the most practical option.
Maltepe, Kartal, Pendik and Tuzla are the districts closest to SAW. For people staying or living here, the transfer is short and comfortable. On the other hand, if you stay on the Asian side but fly from Istanbul Airport, you need to allow for bridge and motorway traffic and set off earlier.
In districts farther inland or by the Bosphorus, such as Çekmeköy, Sancaktepe and Beykoz, travel time changes with the time of day. A chauffeured transfer is especially convenient for families renting villas in these areas, because you avoid navigation stress and the hunt for parking.
Distance summary to IST and SAW
As a general framework: Sultanahmet and Fatih are roughly 45-50 km from IST and about 50-55 km from SAW. Taksim and Beşiktaş are around 40-45 km from IST. Levent, Maslak and Sarıyer are the business areas closest to IST. Kadıköy and Ataşehir are roughly 25-35 km from SAW, while Pendik and Kartal are much closer. These are approximate figures; your actual time will vary with traffic, weather and the hour of day.
The key point about travel time is that Istanbul traffic is unpredictable. On weekday mornings and evenings, and during holidays, the same distance can take much longer. For international flights we suggest aiming to be at the airport at least three hours before departure and booking your transfer accordingly. Our team tracks your flight, so if your landing is delayed, the pickup is adjusted too.
Vehicle classes
At Kemp Transfer we offer three main options based on passenger count and luggage. The VIP sedan is a quiet, comfortable and economical choice for one to three passengers and business travellers. The VIP minivan gives families of four to six, and groups with extra luggage, plenty of interior space. The Sprinter is ideal for groups of seven to ten, corporate teams and trips with friends.
For larger events we also provide a chauffeured minibus (8-16) or bus (30+). Tour groups, wedding and party guests or conference delegates can travel together, on time, in a single vehicle. All our vehicles are driven by professional, experienced chauffeurs, and extras such as child seats are arranged when requested in advance.
